is barack obama, and the presidency, which is the highest ranking officer of our country. and i think that is what they don't realize is they're disparaging the office that basically leads not only the country but the free world, and when we start talking about how are they going to negotiate comprehensive immigration reform, they're going to send vice president biden. that's great, but the republicans need to understand that in order for them to pass comprehensive immigration reform, they're going to need to have a coalition of republicans and diversity within the democratic party on both sides. i think colin powell said it best. colin powell, a republican that has served on several administrations, he's tried to shepherd the republican party into a new era, and it's not a matter of just touting one person of color every so often for the republican party. american voters understand when someone is not being authentic and i think not only do they have a diversity problem, they have an authenticity problem. >> professor, to her point, colin powell took issue with some of the racially c

in the country. we had the flight of manufacturing jobs until recently. there's a bit of a turn around there. it seems to me president obama's biggest priority should not be the deficit. it should be restoring shared economic growth. yes, we need to do something about the long term deficit. i think the big argument is going to be between people who want to argue that the whole deal is deficit reduction. let's spend all our time putting on our green eye shades and talking these numbers. ezra will be excellent in describing what the numbers need. in fact, we could get a deficit on a decent course for a few years with about 1.5 trillion deficit reduction then move on to other issues. you are going to talk about it later, obviously guns and immigration. can we restore shared growth? >> yeah. >> people at the bottom go up as well as people at the top. that was the core promise for the obama campaign. >> this is not a small thing. there is no guarantee. if we bring down the deficit, there's no guarantee the next president will be a democrat or to the left of center. we may want a deficit reduction

that level of carnage or worse every single day across our country because every day of the year an average of 33 americans are murdered with guns. here is another way to think about what that means. one week from today, president obama will take the oath of office for his second term, and unless we take action during those four years, some 48,000 americans will be killed with guns, nearly twice as many people as were killed in combat the during the entire vietnam war. i've made it a very clear that our bipartisan coalition of mayors is supporting seven measures country that need for legislation and for that require only executive action. we are hopeful the president and vice president and i want to talk to you on each of them briefly. first and most urgent, we need the president and congress together to require a background check for all gun sales including a private sales at gun shows and online. these private sales now account for more than 40% of all gun sales nationally, which means that in 2012 alone, there were more than 6 million gun sales that happened with no background checks. ma
